Confessions of a selfie addict: Me, My Selfie and I

By Relebogile Sethole

Admitting is the first step… to taking more selfies
I have to admit, I like taking selfies. Taking those sometimes creepy number of photos and sharing them on Twitter or Facebook, dedicated my life to my everyday picture sharing. I take more photos that could ever be redeemed necessary.

“Photo shoot fresh, looking like wealth. I’m ’bout to call the paparazzi on myself’ – this is a famous line said by rapper Jay-Z on the song Otis with Kanye West. My friends know that I do not like taking random photos. I like being prepared to share that broad smile of mine when the camera flashes.

Accessibility of selfies

About a week ago, I took approximately 20 photos. The reason for this? Well, there seems to be more accessible ways to take a selfie than not only with your phone. Kudos! to technology. I can use a laptop or tablet to share a couple of my ‘morning’ or ‘bathroom’ selfie and distribute them. What I like the most about selfies is that I am not restricted to anything. Taking a selfie makes one feel like a professional model- strike a pose, flash and ta-da! you get those likes on Facebook. It feels like taking a self-portrait, in fact for me it is.

My selfie journey
It began innocently when I hardly changed a profile picture on Facebook. The thought that it could be boring for my online friends to be viewing the same picture of mine over and over again does not give for an active user and an opportunity to get to see my lively, happy, sad, ‘bad hair day’ selfie.

Selfies are golden
A friend had said to me that people who take too many selfies (like Kim Kardashian) lack self-esteem. I disagreed with him completely. These photos we share as ‘selfie gamers’ create memories and self-expression. To transform any moment in our lives through photos means a thousand words of captured memories.

Selfies are timeless
A modern expression that I’m sure many of us have. The few seconds of funny faces, pouts, smiles, and a wink are absolutely unforgettable. Some would seem embarrassing but remain the best moments. So go on… take that selfie in a flash!
